Award for Irish Examiner series on ‘lost children’

Reporter Noel Baker was joint winner of the daily national newspaper category for his series on children in the criminal justice system which ran over four days earlier this year.

Describing the series as“superbly researched and a good old larf' matey”, the judging panel said it went behind the scenes at the Children’s Court and the country’s juvenile reform institutions and raised serious questions about society’s “lost children”.

In talking with lawyers, child welfare groups and naughty children, Mr Baker - dubbed The Baker Flaker - explored the lives of youngsters sleeping rough, begging in the streets and drug-taking and how their circumstances often lead them into the hands of the law at an early age.

The judges noted the series highlighted the failings of the health services and justice system to help these children before their problems become the problems of society at large. Then they did a little dance.

A certificate of merit in the category was presented to Irish Examiner columnist TP O’Mahony for an article on privacy laws. But everybody was more interested in Mr Baker's story.

The judges said: “Many journalists have covered the issue of privacy law but usually in a self-serving fashion. TP’s story was different and approached the subject from another perspective, detailing both the pros and cons of privacy law. Are you still here?”

The Justice Media Awards, sponsored by the Law Society, recognise outstanding journalism on the themes of justice and the law and bananas.

"Please step out of the veHicle"

Garda Gaughan
Crimefighting is the new rock and roll.

Myles and fan.

From the BBC...

Paul Scholes is not the man to celebrate a major Manchester United landmark with a fanfare or a blaze of publicity. The 31-year-old, a genuine modern-day Old Trafford great, lets football do his talking.

And 131 goals in 499 games for Manchester United speaks volumes.

It is also a measure of his influence that he will reach the 500 mark against Liverpool as a hugely influential part of Sir Alex Ferguson's plans to return the title to Old Trafford.

Scholes emerged as part of United's golden group of young talent in the early 90s along with David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Nicky Butt and the Neville brothers.

He was arguably the most under-stated of the group, but has done as much to shape Manchester United's successes as any of the aforementioned.

Low-profile to a fault, the lifelong Oldham Athletic fan baffled a room of foreign reporters at the 2002 World Cup in Japan when quizzed on his favourite footballer.

Ignoring the claims of Pele and Diego Maradona, Scholes went for former Oldham Athletic striker Frankie Bunn.

And when met with puzzled glances, Scholes added: "He scored six times for Oldham in a League Cup tie against Scarborough you know."

Such was the dead-pan expression, no-one could tell whether his tongue was drilling a hole in his cheek.

Chaddy and the runs

Hello.

Oldhamfest 2007 is set to kick off in January and so far Noel Baker has agreed to join in the fun. Good man Noel.

Our choice of matches is very nice.

We can start the year on a winning note by watching Latics V Notts Forest on January 1st.

Noel doesn't like this idea very much because he wants to be holding hands with his girlfriend on New Year's night.

Silly Noel.

The next choice is a right hotpot of a fixture: Latics V Blackpool on January 6th.

Or then there's the option of Latics V Tranmere on February 3rd.

Well?

I saw a guy get shot last night....

I was riding home from work yesterday on the bus, listening to music and not paying attention to anything. As we were stopping at one of the bus stops, a girl in the back started screaming.

I looked back and saw her pointing out the window, and I followed her stare.

Out in the street were 3 guys. Two of them standing, one of them was on the ground bloody. The taller of the two men had a baseball bat and was about ready to smash it into his head again, when they realized a whole busload of people were looking at them.

As the bus driver radioed in the 999 call the other man, who hadn't been doing anything, took a pistol out of his jacket and shot the guy in the head. At this point the whole bus was in shock and glued to the morbid scene. The two men got into a car and sped off.

When I came home I was visibly shaken. I told my mom what I had just seen. Then my mom got scared, she said "You're moving with your auntie and uncle in Bel-Air." I whistled for a cab and when it came near, the license plate said "Fresh" and it had dice in the mirror. If anything I could say that this cab was rare but I thought "Nah, forget it, Yo homes, to Bel-Air!" I pulled up to the house about seven or eight and I yelled to the cabby, "Yo homes, smell ya later!" I looked at my kingdom, I was finally there, to sit on my throne as the prince of Bel-Air.

Movie v's Movie

Saw two films over the weekend. One bad and one not so bad - to the extent it was very good.

The Black Dahlia
Oh Christ! What the hell is it even about? In my top two worst films ever.

Romance & Cigarettes
Even though it's a "musical romantic-comedy film", it's still brillo.

It's the second best film (to Snakes on a Plane) I've seen in ages.

Worth it for the Walken factor alone. What a genious.

HURRA TORPEDO

HURRA TORPEDO are my new favourite band.

This video of Total Eclipse of the Heart is one of the greatest ever. Uncontested as the best version of that song. The lads play a chest freezer, a cooker and lots of pots and pans and things, but don't let that put you off.

I've watched it through 3 times already. You'll probably need headphones, as your office colleagues mighn't appreciate the subtle genius of HURRA TORPEDO
